Security deposits & interest
Under the Chicago Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (RLTO), landlords must hold your deposit in a separate account, pay annual interest where required, and return it (with an itemized statement of any deductions) within set deadlines after you move out. Failure can entitle you to damages.
Repairs & the warranty of habitability
Your unit must be kept fit to live in — heat, plumbing, working locks, no major code violations. The RLTO gives tenants remedies when a landlord fails to maintain essential services, including notice-and-repair and, in some cases, rent reduction. Document everything in writing.
Evictions & required notice
Illinois requires proper written notice before an eviction case can be filed, and only a court — never a landlord directly — can order you out. Lockouts and utility shutoffs to force a tenant out are illegal in Chicago.
Retaliation & your right to complain
A landlord generally can't retaliate against you for requesting repairs, reporting code violations, or exercising your legal rights. If you believe you're facing retaliation, keep records and seek legal help promptly.
